Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-PГ©rigord, 1st Prince de BГ©nГ©vente (French pronunciation: [КѓaКЃl moКЃis dЙ™ tal(Й›)КЃЙ‘Мѓ peКЃiЙЎЙ”КЃ]; 2 February 1754[1]  вЂ“ 17 May 1838) was a French diplomat. He worked successfully from the regime of Louis XVI, through the French Revolution and then under Napoleon I, Louis XVIII, Charles X, and Louis-Philippe. Known since the turn of the 19th century simply by the name Talleyrand, he remains one of those historical figures that polarize opinions. Some regard him as one of the most versatile, skilled and influential diplomats in European history, and some believe that he was a traitor, betraying in turn, the Ancien RГ©gime, the French Revolution, Napoleon, and the Restoration. That he did all of this and kept his head from the French "national razor", dying from natural causes at the age of 83, is worthy testament to his gifts both for politics and for political intrigue....
